Hazard

Pieces of masonry break off or the entire gable end wall collapses.

Potential structural strengthening project

Use a similar technique as for securing parapets. Fit horizontal ties through the gable and secure them to horizontal timber members running through the roof (purlins), and pattress plates (also known as wall anchors or plates) fixed back into the roof framing.

Possible first steps with a structural engineer

They assess the structural capacity of the gable ends and provide specifications for the ties and pattress plates fixed back into the roof framing.
